Meet Our Team

Associate Professor Magdalena Simonis

General Practitioner

Associate Professor Magdalena Simonis is a GP women’s health expert with interests in chronic disease prevention, lifestyle management, menopause,  sexual and reproductive health. Early in her career,  Magdalena trained as a  GP obstetrician and now provides shared care with the major obstetric hospitals in Melbourne. She also  inserts and removes Implanon,  MiRENA and other Intrauterine devices, provides contraceptive and sexual health advice. Magdalena is also  a primary care researcher with the Department of General Practice at the University of Melbourne and a teacher/ examiner  of GPs and medical students. Qualifications: MBBS  FRACGP DRANZCOG MHHS MDHS.

She is a long standing member of the  Expert Committee for Quality Care for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners ( RACGP), the elected representative for GPs at the Australian Medical Association ( AMA) and a Government health advisor on numerous women’s health issues which includes endometriosis, family violence, the National Strategy for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, perimenopause and  menopause. Magdalena is  sought after spokesperson and key note speaker and  also advises several not-for profit organisations and is on the Breast Cancer Network Australia Strategy and Policy Expert Advisory Group,  had been on the Women’s Health Victoria Board for 8 years, and is a Board Director at The Melbourne Teaching Health Clinics  (MTHC) at the University of Melbourne.   

Dr Cecilia Phua

Medical Practitioner

Dr Phua completed her medical degree at Monash University (Clayton Campus) in 2010. She has worked in Monash Medical Centre, Ballarat Hospital and Goulburn Valley Hospital, gaining widespread experience in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine and Anaesthesia. She ventured into Occupational Medicine whilst looking for work-life balance and is passionate in assisting employees and employers in the return to work process. Dr Phua strives to work together with employees, employers and other stakeholders in realizing the health benefits of work.

Dr Gini Skinner

General Practitioner

Dr Gini Skinner is a general practitioner with 30 years’ experience in medicine and 14 years in travel medicine. 

She has a keen interest in travel health and infectious diseases which followed from working in a travel and family medicine practice in Singapore in 2007. 

She has an understanding of what issues families might encounter when they travel for recreation or to live and work overseas. 

She enjoys working in Travel Doctor’s team environment where knowledge is shared between doctors, skilled immunisation and travel health nurses and a savvy reception and administrative team. 
The coordinated and dedicated patient care makes Travel Doctor a unique specialist practice where she finds it a pleasure to work. 

Dr Kanaan Kanaan

Medical Practitioner

Dr Kanaan is an Approved Medical Specialist (AMS) for both WorkSafe (VIC) & WorkCover (WA), authorising him to undertake impairment assessments of injured workers seeking to claim specified statutory entitlements or pursue common law action. He is also a Specialist Occupational Physician with a 17-year-experience in the field of occupational & environmental medicine, both in Australia & the UK, covering various industries: Commercial drivers, Rail Workers, Seafarers & Coastal Pilots, Civil Aviation, Ship Building, Construction, Production, Engineering, Mining, Oil & Gas, Commonwealth & Local Government e.g. the Australian Antarctic Division, Department of Home Affairs, Services Australia and the UK National Health service (NHS).   Dr Kanaan is an accredited Health Professional (AHP) under Australian National Standards for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers, a Medical Inspector of Seafarers (MIS) under Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) under the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), a Government Contracted Doctor (GCD) for Disability Medical Assessment, a Panel Physician for Visa Medical Assessment, a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) and a Medical Review Officer (MRO).  He is also a Registered Medical Practitioner for InjuryNET Injury Management Program (Australia) and an accredited physician for the administration of Yellow Fever Vaccination.

Dr Mark Carty

General Practitioner

My name is Mark Carty. My medical training was at Melbourne University(MBBS 1978) and St Vincent’s Hospital, after which I did a few years of rural and city hospital work and 12 years of General Practice, mainly in community Health, East Preston. In 1996,I started Travel Medicine, and this is my current role, obtaining the MPH and TM(Public Health and Tropical Medicine) in 2008. We mainly see corporate and retail travellers before travel to organise vaccines and medical preparation. If required, we see travellers after return for medical checks and follow up.

Dr Sonny Lau

General Practitioner

Dr Lau graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1983. After his internship in Melbourne, he underwent basic physician training in Hong Kong 1985 – 1991. In 1992, Dr Lau gained training in Infectious Diseases at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne. He has been working specifically in the travel medicine field since 1993. He completed his Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at the James Cook University of North Queensland in Townsville in 1998.  He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and a fellow of the Faculty of Travel Medicine, Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. His special interest is tropical diseases in returned travellers. From mid- 2020, Dr Lau has also worked in the COVID-19 Public Health Division of the Department of Health and Human Services in Victoria.

Dr Stuart Turnbull

General Practitioner

Dr Stuart Turnbull graduated MB, BS, BMedSc from Monash University. Dr Turnbull spent several years working in various positions at Western Hospital, gaining experience in a range of disciplines. He took up a medical advisor position at the Victorian Public Transport Corporation before becoming Chief Medical Officer in 1994. After gaining a GDOEH from Monash, Dr Turnbull worked as a medical advisor in many industries although his main areas of expertise are in the rail and maritime sectors.

Dr Turnbull is presently Chief Medical Officer for Metro Trains Melbourne and Vline and also advises other rail operators on the health and wellbeing of their workers. He has been involved in the development of the NTC National Medical Standards for Rail Safety Workers and sits on the CMO Council. Dr Turnbull is Secretary-General of the UIMC, an international organisation of railway doctors. He is also an MRO, offering advice on drug testing.

Dr Virginia Li

Medical Practitioner

Dr Li graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2002. She gained her surgical experience working in cardiac surgery and completed basic surgical training under The Royal Australasian Collage of Surgeons in 2006.

While searching for a work-life balance, Dr Li developed an interest in occupational medicine. She is a member of The Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine (ANZSOM) and has been a CPD committee member of ANZSOM since 2012. Dr Li is a strong believer in the health benefits of work. Her areas of interest in occupational medicine are injury management, fitness for duties assessment and worksite visits. Dr Li also has a particular interest in assessing return to work in particular return to work post-surgery.

Dr Yael Bodian

General Practitioner

Dr Bodian graduated University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery. She then obtained a diploma in obstetrics and Gynaecology and her Fellowship in general practice.

Dr Bodian completed a rotating residency program including time at the Royal Children's hospital, Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, Mercy Maternity Hospital and nine months in two general practices. She is a vocationally registered general practitioner and has been practicing in Melbourne CBD since 1978.

Russell Boyle

Exercise Physiologist

Russell Boyle is an accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) who enjoys exercise and passionate about helping others. He completed his Master of Clinical Exercise Rehabilitation at Victoria University, with completion of a systematic review and meta-analysis minor thesis into the effects of exercise as a therapy for Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Since graduating Russell has also been a sessional teacher at Victoria University into the undergraduate unit ‘Resistance training’, as well as working as a Strength and conditioning coach for Netball Victoria state teams and the SEABL/NBL1 Melbourne Tigers basketball team.

Russell has been working as an AEP in private practice with various acute and chronic conditions e.g. musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological, until joining Sonic Health Plus in May 2020. Occupational health is an interesting field as it combines ability to educate on health and wellness with performing pre-employment assessments to assist people to get jobs of their choosing.

Outside of work, Russell loves exercise and going to the gym, enjoys watching all sports, particularly basketball, AFL, and Formula 1. Participating in team sports, walking whenever possible, and enjoying a laugh.
