The use of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) at the workplace is a significant occupational health and safety concern. These substances have a variety of effects on users depending on the type and amount of the substance consumed. Effects includes an alteration in mental and physical capabilities which can lead to poor judgement and reasoning, loss of control and coordination, mood changes, risk-taking behaviour, an increase in accidents and injuries, and long-term health effects.

The Sonic HealthPlus Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training course has been designed to equip individuals and companies with an understanding of rights and responsibilities in relation to alcohol and other drugs at the workplace. This training covers signs and symptoms of AOD abuse as well as long-term effects, testing methods and responsibilities of the workplace, purpose and implementation of a workplace Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy, as well as statistical and legal background information.

Our Manual Handling Awareness course focuses on the prevention of manual handling injuries, giving an overview of relevant anatomy and mechanisms of injury, and discusses the basics of the legal background including duty of care requirements for both employers and employees.

In our experience we consider the combination of a presentation and a practical session is most beneficial. We have a strong focus on the practical elements and encourage active participation from attendees. Our programs offer flexibility and allow for customisation of training to be workplace specific enabling workers to apply their knowledge to relevant job tasks.

Following a similar structure to the accredited training, this course will address the following areas:

The Mental Health Awareness four-hour seminar aims to increase participant’s understanding of four areas of mental illness (depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance abuse). This, in turn, will reduce any fear or stigma that may surround mental illness, thus providing attendees with “First Aid” skills to assist persons experiencing a mental health problem prior to professional help being sought.

Mental Health Awareness also aims to provide skills and confidence to staff to equip them to be able to more effectively manage clients, as well as to implement a Mental Health First Aid Action Plan. The Mental Health Awareness course does not seek to provide participants with counselling or therapy qualifications; but will clarify the distinctive difference between the roles of practicing Mental Health First Aid versus that of the medical professional.

There will be opportunity to ask questions and clarify information in relation to mental health issues in your own workplace.

The Office Workstation Assessor workshop is specifically designed to give participants the practical skills to carry out assessments of the ergonomic and health and safety aspects of office workstations. During this one-day workshop, participants will gain the skills and confidence to carry out structured assessments within their own organisation and to compile clear and concise reports.

In addition to gaining valuable knowledge about how to be personally safe and comfortable at work, participants will find themselves well placed to assist their current (or future) employer to discharge legislative duties to appropriately induct, educate and monitor employees who carry out work at office workstations.

Sonic HealthPlus’ workshop facilitators are all qualified Exercise Physiologists, Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapists with extensive industry experience in providing both proactive health and safety assessments and workplace based rehabilitation for persons working at office workstations.

Participants will be supervised while conducting assessments during the workshop and will be able to submit their first three (3) independent reports for review and feedback from their facilitator, building their confidence to work independently (conditions apply).

  • Introduction to relevant OHS legislation and relevant state and federal codes of practice
  • Introduction to the major OHS risk factors related to use of office workstations
    • Work related musculoskeletal disorders arising from adverse ergonomics
    • Workplace “stress” arising from poorly designed work and workflow
    • Workplace “stress” arising from interaction with co-workers and clients o Issues arising from the use of telephonic equipment e.g. “acoustic shock”
    • Manual task issues arising from document and file handling and transport
    • Electrical safety issues
  • Principles for control of the major OHS risk factors with reference to the “hierarchy of control”
  • Instruction in the use of the Office Workstation Assessment tool
  • Supervised use of the Office Workstation Assessment tool to conduct two assessments on persons at actual workstations during the course of the workshop.
  • Detailed advice regarding the appropriate time and options for seeking professional assistance.
  • Post workshop assistance:
    • Entitlement to submit up to three (3) workstation assessment reports for feedback (time limits apply)

Upon successful completion of the course participants will be issued with a Certificate of Completion – Office Workstation Assessor Workshop.

We have all experienced stress at some point in our lives, whether it be related to home life or work. Knowing what causes stress for you can help you cope with it better and provide mental and emotional relief. A little bit of stress is a good thing; it can provide motivation and drive us to achieve high. However, when you are consistently stressed, it affects your perception, sleep and we tend to physically hold it in our bodies, leading to serious medical illnesses and anxiety disorders.

In this training package, you will be asked to complete some self-reflective activities. They will help you figure out your areas of stress and how you can change your responses to them. Everything you enter in the self-reflective activities is confidential. This course cannot replace the work of a counsellor or therapist, it simply helps you to recognise, understand and manage your daily stress. It will help you gain more control and give you the knowledge and skills to make healthy changes in your lifestyle to combat high stress levels.

Stress is a growing concern in our complex modern world which places increasing demands on the individual. Prolonged high stress levels are linked to a number of adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, depression, anxiety and mental illness.

Workplaces have a considerable influence on their employees’ stress levels. The high costs of employee stress to Australian employers are expressed through decreased morale, increasing fatigue levels and higher accident rates in the workplace, leading to absenteeism, lost productivity, and employee replacement.

Managing people who have differing personalities, styles of communication and motivational goals create significant challenges for those working in people management roles.  In fact, studies have shown that most people tend to communicate effectively with only 25% of the population – that is, other people with the same personality style as their own.

This four hour seminar will assist participants to understand personality as a concept, as well as recognising their own and others’ personality styles. It will examine the key differences between ‘types,’ their strengths and limitations, how different styles think about time management and conflict and criticism, what motivates them, and how to more effectively communicate with each personality style.  In the modern business world, this is a key skill that will allow participants to better manage, coach and support colleagues and staff.
