Sonic HealthPlus is contracted to provide general practice and emergency medicine services to support the local Newman community.  Newman is located in Western Australia’s remote North West Pilbara region approximately 2,000 kilometres north of Perth.

This project requires an integrated healthcare solution servicing a community of more than 10,000 individuals, plus a FIFO population of approximately 3,000. Services are provided via: 

  • Provision of medical services to Newman Hospital
  • 24 hour inpatient and emergency care and acute trauma response
  • Provision of primary healthcare (general practice) including deployment of credentialed doctors, specialists, nurses, physiotherapists, paramedics and associated medical receptionist personnel
  • Clinical management and treatment of illness and injuries
  • Pharmaceutical supply and management
  • Management of reportable injuries under OSHA classification guidelines
  • Rapid mobilisation and deployment of project staff.


  • Scope change, including more stringent credentialing requirements of doctors over the life of the contract
  • Recruitment, deployment and management of fully credentialed, WACHS-approved, residential and FIFO medical practitioners and allied health personnel to WA’s remote north-west
  • Management of significant inpatient and afterhours emergency presentations, including life-threatening conditions
  • Management of an entire community’s primary healthcare needs, including indigenous healthcare requirements
  • Management of demand variability over the life of the contract, supplying between two and five fulltime credentialed doctors as required
  • Managing residential accommodation constraints
  • Attending to strict WACHS hospital and inpatient guidelines.

Key Learnings

  • Developed a national medical personnel recruitment team and established a pool of FIFO medical practitioners
  • Established a Property Division to attend to residential accommodation requirements of deployed practitioners and staff
  • Aligned clinical governance framework with that of Australian Health Departments, as well as with Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and Australian General Practice Accreditation standards
  • Factored community needs and expectations into contract management.

Please note: Patients who attend for their medical assessment presenting with flu-like symptoms or have recently travelled from a COVID hotspot may be turned away.
